AWS announced on October 16, 2026, that Lambda durable functions are available in AWS GovCloud (US-West) and AWS GovCloud (US-East). The expansion brings the feature’s multi-step workflow capabilities to those two regions. AWS announcement
Checkpoints and waits inside Lambda
According to AWS, durable functions extend Lambda’s programming model with event-handler primitives such as step and wait. These let developers checkpoint progress, recover automatically from failures and pause executions. AWS names order workflows, user onboarding and AI-assisted tasks as example applications. The billing qualification matters: AWS says paused executions do not incur compute charges for on-demand functions. That is a claim about a specific charge during a pause—not a statement that an entire waiting workflow is free. Engineers estimating costs should preserve that distinction. AWS announcement
Deployment options
AWS says developers can activate durable functions for new Lambda functions through the Lambda API, AWS Management Console or AWS SDK. The announcement also lists infrastructure-as-code support through AWS CloudFormation, AWS Serverless Application Model and AWS Cloud Development Kit. Python 3.13 and 3.14, plus Node.js 22 and 24, are among the language versions it names. AWS announcement
What to evaluate before rollout
For teams considering adoption, start by identifying which workflow operations need checkpoints and where execution should pause. Review failure handling and cost assumptions alongside that design rather than treating regional availability as the whole deployment decision.
For GovCloud users, this is a regional availability update, not a compliance assessment of any particular application. Evaluate the workflow’s data flows, permissions and operational controls against the application’s requirements before deployment.
