A new regional connection option
In a notice posted October 16, 2026, AWS announced support for second-generation Outposts racks in the AWS Mexico (Central) Region. Customers can now order racks connected to that Region, according to the AWS announcement.
AWS describes Outposts racks as extending its infrastructure, services, APIs and tools into on-premises data centers or colocation facilities. This update expands the regional connection choices for those installations; its scope is specifically second-generation racks.
What engineers should evaluate
AWS positions the additional regional option as a way for customers to address latency and data-residency needs. The notice does not provide latency benchmarks or workload-specific performance results.
For deployment planning, treat the expansion as another architecture option—not evidence of an automatic performance improvement. Teams should:
- Compare network paths between the proposed installation site and candidate Regions.
- Identify which application interactions would depend on the site-to-Region connection.
- Validate latency and data-handling requirements against the proposed architecture.
These checks help turn a regional availability announcement into a deployment decision grounded in the workload’s requirements.
Check installation geography separately
The supported regional connection is only one part of planning an installation. AWS directs customers to its Outposts rack FAQs for the current lists of supported countries, territories and AWS Regions, as noted in the announcement.
Before ordering, confirm both the intended installation location and the chosen regional connection. Do not treat support for Mexico (Central) as confirmation that any proposed installation site is eligible.
