AWS made Interconnect multicloud generally available on April 14, with Google Cloud as its first launch partner. The service provides private connections between AWS environments and another cloud provider.
A managed cross-cloud connection
The launch announcement listed five AWS Regions and described integration with Transit Gateway and Cloud WAN. Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure were identified as later additions in 2026; those plans should not be read as capabilities available at the April launch.
For organizations already transferring data between AWS and Google Cloud, the release creates another connectivity option to compare with the existing network arrangement. The meaningful comparison starts with traffic paths and failure requirements, rather than a general preference for using multiple clouds.
Our analysis: private connectivity changes the transport decision, but application placement remains a separate architectural choice. A database call that crosses clouds still needs a latency budget, an ownership boundary, and a plan for degraded connectivity.
Draw the failure path first
Inventory the applications that would use the connection, their peak transfer patterns, and the consequences of losing access to the remote dependency. Distinguish replication traffic from interactive requests; they may tolerate very different interruption windows.
Review routing, address allocation, and monitoring responsibilities with both cloud teams. A successful connection setup is not enough if neither team owns an end-to-end alert when requests begin failing.
Before changing production traffic, run a bounded migration with a known return path. Measure the behavior under realistic load and interruption, and confirm commercial terms against the chosen bandwidth and geography. The first useful result is a documented network decision for a specific dependency, supported by observed application behavior.
