Microsoft Research introduces Vega for private credential proofs

Microsoft Research introduced Vega on May 21 as a system for proving selected facts from digital credentials without handing over the underlying document. The research announcement focuses on private credential presentation, including interactions mediated by AI agents.

Reuse work across presentations

Microsoft described a zero-knowledge proof design that performs credential-related preparation once and reuses that work for later presentations. The proposal keeps credential processing on the user’s device and targets formats such as mobile driver’s licenses.

The announcement described a Rust implementation and said open sourcing was forthcoming. It therefore should not be read as a claim that a publicly released, independently assessed implementation was already available that day.

Specify the exact fact being requested

Our engineering takeaway is to start with the minimum statement a service needs to verify. An eligibility check may require a yes-or-no result, while an account workflow may need a different relationship to the credential holder. Those requirements should be explicit before selecting a proof mechanism.

Draw the information flow from issuer to wallet to verifier. Identify what each participant learns, what it retains and what changes between presentations. This helps a team distinguish a cryptographic privacy property from broader application behavior such as logging and account linking.

Evaluate the surrounding lifecycle

A prototype review should include expired credentials, changed eligibility and interrupted presentations, rather than only a successful proof. Decide how the service explains a failed check without asking the user to disclose unnecessary information as a fallback.

For agent-mediated use, make the requested fact and destination visible before presentation. The research offers a concrete design direction, but a deployable identity workflow still needs clear user consent, lifecycle handling and implementation review around the proof itself.
