Microsoft adds an efficient MAI-Image-2 variant

The April release adds a second image-generation option aimed at faster, higher-volume workflows, with Foundry and playground access.

Microsoft introduced MAI-Image-2-Efficient on April 14, adding a second option alongside MAI-Image-2. The announcement positioned the new model for higher-volume image generation and said it was available through Foundry and the MAI Playground.

Two models with different intended jobs

Microsoft described the efficient variant as suitable for tasks such as product imagery, marketing drafts and interface mockups. It retained the original model as its preferred option for especially detailed scenes and more complex lettering. The company also reported speed and cost improvements under specified test conditions.

Playground availability carried a market limitation in the announcement: selected markets were supported, with European Union availability still described as forthcoming.

Measure accepted images, not generated images

Our engineering recommendation is to compare the cost of an accepted asset. A lower generation price can be useful, but the production decision should include retries, manual correction and review time.

Start with a fixed set of briefs and define what would disqualify each result. For a catalog image, that might be the wrong object count or an incorrect label. For a rough layout study, less precise detail may be acceptable. Score those workflows separately so a demanding final-deliverable test does not obscure a useful drafting use case.

Make model routing observable

A team adopting both models could make the routing rule explicit: one path for exploratory batches, another for assets requiring more demanding review. Save the selected model with the resulting file so editors can understand how it was produced.

Before changing a default, inspect latency across realistic concurrency levels and verify that quality remains acceptable at the intended image dimensions. Microsoft’s published comparisons are a starting point for that investigation, not a substitute for the application’s acceptance test.
