Gemini added source-aware creation across Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive

Google announced beta Gemini features for Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive that can use selected files, email and web material as context. The March 10 announcement said Docs could draft from relevant material and match a reference document’s format, while Sheets could create and extend structured workbooks. Drive gained natural-language answers across selected files, with citations in its AI-generated overview.

Context became part of the editing surface

The meaningful shift is not another writing prompt. Google is moving retrieval and generation into the document workflow, where the user can choose source material and inspect the result in place. For teams, that makes source selection, access control and review behavior part of the feature’s practical quality. A polished draft can still combine stale, incomplete or differently scoped material. Citations help with inspection, but they do not replace approval for decisions encoded in a spreadsheet or document.

What teams should check

The beta initially targeted Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, with language and regional limits varying by product. Administrators and engineering leaders evaluating it should test which connected sources are available to a user, how generated values are distinguished from retrieved values, and whether reference-document formatting carries hidden assumptions into a new artifact.

A useful trial should include conflicting source documents, missing permissions and a spreadsheet whose formulas matter more than its prose. Measure correction effort rather than generation speed alone. The operational question is whether the feature produces an auditable starting point inside existing controls, not whether it can fill a blank page.
