AWS cuts the EMR charge for EMR on EKS by 30%

The reduction applies automatically to EMR’s per-vCPU-hour and per-GB-hour charges across supported AWS Regions. Underlying EKS charges remain unchanged.

Announcement: · From AWS

Amazon Web Services announced a 30% reduction in the EMR charge for Amazon EMR on EKS on October 23, 2026. The change lowers both the per-vCPU-hour and per-GB-hour charges for that deployment option, while underlying Amazon EKS charges remain unchanged, according to the AWS announcement.

Automatic across supported Regions

The lower pricing applies to all EMR workloads running on EKS, in every AWS Region where Amazon EMR on EKS is available. AWS says the new rates apply automatically, with no customer action required. The release notice concerns the EMR charge for the EKS deployment option, not pricing across every EMR deployment model.

A lower EMR charge is not a 30% smaller bill

The distinction between the EMR charge and total workload cost matters for forecasting. With consumption and other costs held constant, overall savings equal 30% of the amount previously attributable to the eligible EMR charge.

For example, if that charge represented 20% of a workload’s total bill, the reduction would lower the total by 6%. This is an illustrative calculation, not an estimate of a typical customer’s savings.

What engineers should check

For budgeting, separate the EMR charge from underlying EKS costs and apply the reduction only to EMR on EKS line items. Compare like-for-like consumption rather than raw monthly totals: additional vCPU-hours or GB-hours could offset the lower unit prices.

AWS’s announcement gives the percentage reduction but does not list absolute regional rates. Use the applicable unit rates and workload consumption to calculate dollar savings for a particular deployment.
