In a notice published on October 23, 2026, AWS announced that Amazon Managed Workflows for Apache Airflow (Amazon MWAA) Provisioned environments are available in Mexico (Central), identified as mx-central-1.
MWAA Serverless was already available in the Region. This expansion therefore adds a deployment option rather than marking MWAA’s first availability there.
What is now available
MWAA is AWS’s managed orchestration service for Apache Airflow, used to set up and operate cloud data pipelines. Customers can create Provisioned environments in Mexico (Central) through the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, AWS SDKs or AWS CloudFormation.
For teams evaluating the new option, check regional pricing and support for the required Airflow version before making a deployment decision.
Evaluate the whole pipeline, not just its orchestrator
AWS says the expansion lets customers run Provisioned workflows closer to their data sources and end users, reducing latency and helping meet data residency requirements. These are the vendor’s stated benefits; the release notice provides no quantified performance results.
For an engineering evaluation, map the locations of data stores, task destinations and external services alongside the Airflow environment. Check the resulting data flows against latency targets and residency obligations rather than treating the Region choice alone as proof that either requirement is met.
For an existing deployment, the practical question is which cross-Region calls would actually change if orchestration moved to Mexico (Central). Use that dependency map to judge whether the new placement option addresses a concrete bottleneck or locality requirement.
