AWS Batch now automatically publishes job state-transition and duration metrics to Amazon CloudWatch, AWS announced on October 6, 2026. AWS says the metrics provide visibility into job queue health, failure rates and job durations. AWS announcement
What AWS Batch publishes
The metrics appear in the AWS/Batch namespace with the JobQueueName dimension. State-transition metrics count jobs entering states such as submitted, running, succeeded and failed. Duration metrics measure elapsed time between states, including submission-to-runnable time and total execution time.
Engineers can view the metrics in the AWS Batch console or the CloudWatch console, and access them through the AWS CLI and AWS SDKs. Metric and access details
Read transitions differently from queue depth
One useful comparison is delay before execution versus time spent executing. If submission-to-runnable duration increases while execution duration remains steady, the pre-execution path is a reasonable place to start investigating. That comparison does not, by itself, establish a root cause.
State-transition counts describe entries into states, not a snapshot of how many jobs currently occupy each state. Treat them as activity over a measurement window rather than as queue depth.
For a failure-rate dashboard, define the denominator and observation window explicitly. Do not assume that jobs submitted and jobs completed during the same interval are the same group of jobs. This distinction matters when interpreting changes in the counts.
Availability and operational checks
AWS says the metrics are available in all AWS Regions where AWS Batch is available. Availability announcement
Before setting latency-sensitive alerts, verify the metric publication frequency. Before estimating monitoring costs, check the applicable pricing for the metrics and any dashboards or alarms you plan to use.
