AWS announced Video Aligned Locking for AWS Elemental MediaLive on September 12, 2026. The feature uses visual signatures to identify corresponding frames and synchronize video pipelines without requiring timecode from the source, according to AWS’s announcement.
Synchronization without source timecode
AWS describes timecode as standard in highly produced, traditional broadcast content, but often unavailable or difficult to manage in digital streaming workflows. The company says achieving frame-accurate locking across video outputs previously required specialized hardware or complex external synchronization workflows.
Video Aligned Locking instead automatically identifies and aligns specific frames across multiple streams using visual signatures. AWS says this enables frame-accurate input switching across standard pipeline channels and linked, cross-region single-pipeline channels.
That cross-region scope matters when evaluating the feature: AWS’s claim is not limited to pipelines operating within one region, but it specifically names linked single-pipeline channels for the cross-region configuration.
What streaming engineers should evaluate
The practical change is the synchronization reference. AWS says source timecode is no longer required for this form of pipeline locking. For teams handling feeds that lack timecode, the feature is therefore worth evaluating as an alternative to workflows built around supplying that reference.
Deployment validation should still treat frame alignment and viewer-visible switching continuity as separate acceptance criteria. Test whether corresponding frames align, then examine what viewers experience during a switch rather than treating the synchronization claim as a blanket guarantee of uninterrupted delivery.
Before adopting the feature in an existing channel design, review the Requirements for Video Aligned Locking documentation and the Implementing Pipeline Locking guide linked from the announcement. Use those requirements to check the proposed configuration, rather than assuming the announcement’s output list alone establishes compatibility.
Availability and supported outputs
AWS says Video Aligned Locking is available in all AWS Regions where AWS Elemental MediaLive is available. The release notice lists supported outputs including HLS, MediaPackage, CMAF Ingest, UDP and SRT.
