AWS announced on September 29, 2026 that Systems Manager documents can now be shared with an entire AWS organization or specific organizational units (OUs) through AWS Resource Access Manager (AWS RAM). Previously, document sharing was limited to public access or lists of individual account IDs, according to the [AWS announcement](https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2026/09/systems-manager-sharing-documents-ram/).

## Sharing follows organization membership

AWS says Systems Manager automatically updates sharing as accounts are added to or removed from the selected organization or OU. Teams using these shares no longer need to maintain the corresponding account lists manually.

For platform teams distributing common operational documents, the practical change is a shift from selecting individual accounts to selecting an organizational boundary. New accounts can come within an existing share as they join the selected organization or OU.

That makes organizational structure relevant to document-sharing reviews. Teams adopting the feature should consider how account moves affect which documents are shared with those accounts, and choose between organization-wide and OU-scoped sharing accordingly.

## The RAM sharing workflow

To share documents, owners create an AWS RAM resource share, add the SSM documents and select the organizations or OUs that should receive access. AWS says the workflow uses RAM and resource-based policies, with access granted through standard AWS authorization.

External-account sharing has an explicit acceptance step: an account outside the owner's organization receives a resource-share invitation and gains access only after accepting it, according to [AWS's launch details](https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2026/09/systems-manager-sharing-documents-ram/).

## Availability and cost

AWS says the capability is available through the Systems Manager console, AWS CLI and AWS SDKs in all AWS Regions where Systems Manager is available. The console starting point is the Documents page.

The [announcement](https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2026/09/systems-manager-sharing-documents-ram/) also states that there is no additional charge to share documents through AWS RAM.
