AWS adds Claude Sonnet 5.5 to GovCloud through Bedrock

Claude Sonnet 5.5 is available through Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud (US), adding a model option for coding and document workflows.

Announcement: · From AWS

AWS announced on September 28, 2026, that Claude Sonnet 5.5 is available in AWS GovCloud (US) through Amazon Bedrock. AWS describes the model as an upgrade from Sonnet 5 for coding and knowledge work. AWS announcement

Confirm the deployment configuration

The announcement establishes availability in AWS GovCloud (US). Before planning a deployment, confirm the target GovCloud region, model identifier and supported inference options in the current Amazon Bedrock documentation.

AWS says Bedrock keeps data within AWS infrastructure with regional data residency, and describes access to AWS-managed features such as Guardrails and Knowledge Bases. These are AWS’s descriptions of the service offering, not proof that a particular application configuration meets its security or compliance requirements. AWS service description

For a deployment review, check data flows, logging destinations, permissions and external dependencies. Also confirm that the Bedrock features the application needs are supported for the intended model and region.

Evaluate the upgrade against complete tasks

For coding, AWS highlights well-scoped tasks such as building and fixing features in the same session and verifying output against requirements. For knowledge work, it lists document edits, spreadsheet cleanup, diagrams and summary slides. Treat these as vendor-described strengths to evaluate against your own workloads, rather than established performance gains for your application. AWS capability descriptions

For existing Sonnet users, a useful next step is a controlled migration evaluation rather than assuming a drop-in replacement. Run representative coding and document tasks through the same acceptance checks used for the current model. Compare output correctness, latency and total cost on identical workloads, accounting for retries and human corrections.

The engineering significance is an additional model choice within GovCloud. Whether it improves an application depends on successful task completion under that application’s deployment constraints—not simply the model’s position in the Sonnet lineup.
