In an announcement published October 12, 2026, AWS introduced Lambda Web Functions, a serverless compute option in which application code listens on a port and handles HTTP requests directly. AWS said the service was available that day in five Regions. AWS announcement
A familiar HTTP server model
At launch, Web Functions supports Node.js. AWS says developers can use frameworks such as Express or Hono without adapters or custom configuration. Native HTTP streaming lets applications send results incrementally, while VPC connectivity provides access to resources inside a virtual private cloud. AWS lists server-rendered applications, AI inference endpoints, streaming APIs and webhooks among the intended workloads. Runtime and feature details
The engineering significance is the programming model: teams can structure request handling around an HTTP server. That is not a blanket compatibility guarantee for every Node.js application or dependency. Teams evaluating a deployment should still check their application’s assumptions rather than treat framework support as sufficient validation.
Concurrency and billing deserve separate attention
AWS says a single warm execution environment can serve multiple concurrent requests. Its announced billing model charges for active CPU time and the memory the environment holds—not idle CPU time spent waiting for databases or downstream services. Execution and billing overview
For engineers, this makes shared mutable state and downstream connection pools useful review targets: check how they behave when several requests use the same environment at once. For cost planning, distinguish active CPU work from retained memory. Excluding waiting time from CPU charges should not be read as eliminating all charges during a wait, because memory remains part of the billing model.
Available in five Regions at launch
The launch Regions are US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), Asia Pacific (Tokyo) and Europe (Ireland). Launch availability
AWS is also renaming existing Lambda functions to Lambda Event Functions. The company explicitly describes this as a naming-only change requiring no code changes or redeployment. Existing users should distinguish that rename from a decision to adopt the new Web Functions programming model. Naming details
