AWS announced support for cross-account management, cross-account backup and delegated administrators in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud (Germany) Region on October 29, 2026. According to the [AWS announcement](https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2026/10/aws-backup-cross-account-esc/), these capabilities let teams centrally manage, monitor and copy backups across accounts in their AWS organization.

## Organization-wide policies and delegated control

Teams can deploy organization-wide backup policies from either their AWS Organizations management account or a delegated administrator account. They can also monitor backup, copy and restore jobs across the organization’s accounts from one place.

AWS says registering a member account as a delegated administrator lets teams manage organizational backups without needing access to the management account. Both policy deployment and delegated administration are covered in the [announcement](https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2026/10/aws-backup-cross-account-esc/).

For platform engineers, the operational benefit is separating routine backup administration from management-account access while retaining centralized oversight. A rollout plan should identify which member account will administer backups and who should have access to it.

## A separate account for recovery copies

Cross-account backup allows recovery points to be copied into a backup vault in another account within the same organization. [AWS says](https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2026/10/aws-backup-cross-account-esc/) this adds protection against accidental or malicious deletion in the source account.

The engineering implication is a separation between the account running a workload and the account holding a recovery copy. Teams should review access to the destination account and vault alongside source-account permissions, rather than treating the copy alone as sufficient protection.

Rollout planning should also include restore tests using copied recovery points. Treat completion of a copy job and validation of an application’s recovery procedure as separate checks against operational requirements.

## Availability and pricing

**Availability:** The announcement covers the AWS European Sovereign Cloud (Germany) Region and describes cross-account operations within the same AWS organization.

**Pricing:** AWS says there is no additional charge for these capabilities; [standard AWS Backup pricing still applies](https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2026/10/aws-backup-cross-account-esc/).
