AWS announced on [October 14, 2026](https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2026/10/aws-backup-fsx-asia-pacific-new-zealand/) that AWS Backup now supports four Amazon FSx services in the **Asia Pacific (New Zealand) Region**. The expansion lets customers centrally manage backups for those file systems alongside other supported AWS resources.

## Four FSx services covered

The announcement names:

- Amazon FSx for Lustre
- Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP
- Amazon FSx for OpenZFS
- Amazon FSx for Windows File Server

For these services in New Zealand, AWS says customers can create policy-based backup plans, schedule backups, apply retention rules, store backups in encrypted vaults and restore file systems when needed. Customers can get started through the AWS Backup console, AWS Command Line Interface or AWS SDKs, according to the [launch notice](https://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2026/10/aws-backup-fsx-asia-pacific-new-zealand/).

## Shared policies, workload-specific recovery planning

The practical change is a shared policy layer: teams can include these regional FSx resources in centralized backup management alongside their other supported AWS resources.

For rollout, define each workload’s acceptable data-loss window, recovery-time target and required recovery history. Use those requirements to guide backup schedules and retention rules rather than applying one policy indiscriminately across all four services.

## Check feature scope before rollout

The announcement confirms regional support for the four named FSx services; it does not enumerate every available AWS Backup feature. AWS directs readers to its documentation for the complete list of supported Regions and features.

Before adopting a plan, verify the capabilities the design requires and run a representative restore exercise. Measure the time needed to make restored files usable by the application, not just whether a backup job completed. Treat that exercise as a check against the workload’s recovery target.
