Amazon Cognito extends multi-Region replication to AWS GovCloud (US)

Cognito’s replication add-on now supports AWS GovCloud (US), giving eligible user pools a standby copy of identity data for regional recovery.

GovCloud gains a standby identity option

Amazon Cognito multi-Region replication now supports AWS GovCloud (US) Regions, AWS announced on October 21, 2026. The expansion brings a capability previously available in 16 commercial Regions to GovCloud workloads. AWS announcement

According to AWS, the feature synchronizes user and machine identity data—including credentials, user pool configurations and federation setups—to a secondary user pool in a designated standby Region. AWS describes synchronization as “near real-time” and says the standby data enables teams to redirect traffic to keep authentication available during a disruption in the primary Region. Eligibility and prerequisites

Multi-Region replication is an add-on for Cognito user pools in the Essentials or Plus feature tiers and requires a multi-Region AWS KMS customer managed key. Regional availability alone therefore does not make every existing user pool eligible; teams evaluating adoption should check both prerequisites. AWS announcement

Replication is only part of recovery

For engineers, the important distinction is between having identity data in another Region and successfully moving authentication traffic there. AWS describes traffic redirection as something the replicated standby enables, but the announcement does not specify automatic failover behavior. It also provides no replication-lag guarantees, recovery-time commitments or pricing amounts. AWS announcement

A recovery plan should identify who or what initiates redirection and test application behavior against the standby configuration. Teams should verify the documented recovery procedures and pricing before setting recovery targets or estimating operating costs.

Likewise, “near real-time” should not be treated as a promise of zero data loss. The feature provides a replicated identity foundation for recovery—not, by itself, assurance that an application’s entire authentication path will recover within a particular deadline.
