GitHub bug bounty spotlight: Trace data, prove impact

In GitHub’s interview, @r31n explains source-to-sink investigation, AI’s supporting role and the need for reproducible proof of security impact.

Announcement: · From GitHub

In an interview published October 22, 2026, GitHub profiles bug bounty researcher @r31n and their work on GitHub Enterprise Server. GitHub says the researcher’s working proofs of concept and clear reproduction steps help its engineers move from triage to remediation more quickly. The interview centers on a practical standard: understand the attack path, reproduce it and explain the security impact. Read GitHub’s interview.

Trace data, then prove impact

@r31n says investigations usually begin by mapping the application and understanding how its components interact, with particular attention to complex functionality, integrations and trust boundaries.

Rather than starting with a particular vulnerability class, the researcher follows attacker-controlled data from entry points to sensitive operations such as network requests, file access and authorization decisions. Along the way, they examine how data is transformed, validated and passed across trust boundaries. A finding is confirmed, in their account, once they understand the attack path, can produce a working proof of concept and can explain the impact. Research workflow.

For engineering teams, a useful application is to review the whole path: where untrusted input enters, which boundaries it crosses and what operation ultimately consumes it—not just individual endpoints in isolation.

Use AI to investigate, then verify

@r31n says AI helps with navigating unfamiliar code, locating call sites, tracing data and writing proof-of-concept scripts after a vulnerability has been identified. But the researcher stresses that AI conclusions require manual verification: a suggested vulnerability still needs to be reproduced, with its violated security boundary and impact understood. GitHub likewise emphasizes validated findings that demonstrate a crossed security boundary rather than merely theorizing one. AI use and verification.

For AI-powered applications, @r31n argues that model-level guardrails should not serve as the sole or primary security boundary. The researcher recommends authorization, least-privilege access, isolation and validation around the model, and treating model output as untrusted input. They warn that familiar vulnerabilities—including injection and server-side request forgery—remain possible when downstream systems consume that output without appropriate controls. Testing AI-powered features.

The engineering takeaway is to follow model output to its destination—a browser, database, shell or web request—and review the controls there, rather than stopping at unexpected model behavior.

A route to VIP invitations

GitHub says researchers who consistently deliver verified, reproducible findings demonstrating a crossed security boundary can earn an invitation to its permanent VIP program. It lists higher payouts, faster response times and early previews of beta products and features as benefits. GitHub’s VIP program description.
