Cloudflare introduces Custom Regions for customer-defined data boundaries

Cloudflare introduced Custom Regions on March 18, allowing enterprise customers to define geographic boundaries for where supported traffic processing occurs. The announcement also expands Cloudflare’s predefined region catalog, adding options including Turkey and the United Arab Emirates alongside compliance-oriented boundaries for IRAP and ISMAP.

A policy boundary tailored to the workload

Cloudflare’s Data Localization Suite previously offered predefined geographic regions. Custom Regions extend that model to customer-selected combinations of Cloudflare locations, which can reflect a company’s contractual, regulatory, or operational requirements more closely than a continent-wide setting. Cloudflare says it now offers 35 predefined regions in addition to the custom option.

The feature changes where supported processing happens; it does not by itself classify every piece of application data. Teams still need to map which requests contain regulated or contractually restricted information and which Cloudflare services participate in each request path.

Verify the whole data path

A useful deployment record should pair the selected region with an explicit inventory: DNS, TLS termination, application security, logs, keys, origin systems, and any third-party processors. The configured Cloudflare boundary is only one part of that chain. Operators should also check how failover behaves and which diagnostic data remains available during an incident.

Testing can use controlled requests from multiple locations, Cloudflare logs, and application-side traces to confirm the expected route. Legal or compliance owners should review the resulting evidence against the actual obligation rather than relying on the region’s name.

Custom Regions give infrastructure teams a more precise platform control, especially where two organizations define “regional” differently. The engineering work is to connect that control to a maintained data-flow model and to revalidate it when services, origins, or requirements change.
