Cloudflare announced AI Gateway spend limits on June 5, adding budgets measured in dollars across requests to multiple model providers. The release post says the limits entered open beta for AI Gateway users on all plans, while identity-driven budgets and policies using Cloudflare Access entered a separate closed beta.
Budgets operate across several dimensions
Operators can scope a limit by model, provider, or administrator-defined attributes such as team, user, or application. Windows may be fixed or rolling and use daily, weekly, or monthly periods. AI Gateway calculates per-request cost from model pricing and tracks cumulative spend against the limit.
When a budget is reached, the default behavior blocks additional requests. Dynamic Routes can instead send subsequent requests to a fallback model. That option preserves service continuity, but it may change output quality or tool behavior, so the fallback needs its own application evaluation. Cloudflare described alerts and intelligent task-based routing as future work, not launch-day features.
Attribution determines whether a limit is trustworthy
Custom metadata is useful only if its producer is trusted. The closed beta with Access derives user, group, or service identity from authentication and can apply budgets to that verified identity. For autonomous workflows, distinct service tokens make it possible to separate one agent’s consumption from another’s.
Teams should start with observed usage, choose a threshold above normal variance, and rehearse what callers see when the limit is exhausted. Cost controls also need an exception process for incidents or scheduled high-volume work.
Spend limits add a direct guardrail against runaway inference bills. They do not measure whether the underlying calls produced useful results; organizations still need workload-specific quality and business metrics alongside cost attribution.
