# Azure Virtual Network routing appliance reaches GA

Azure Virtual Network routing appliance became generally available on August 4. Microsoft's [networking announcement](https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/azurenetworkingblog/azure-virtual-network-routing-appliance-is-now-generally-available/4543616) describes a managed routing layer on specialized hardware for private traffic across virtual networks. Published capabilities include 50, 100, and 200 Gbps tiers, IPv4, IPv6, and dual-stack forwarding, built-in high availability and zone resiliency, plus Azure Monitor flow and throughput metrics.

## Routing becomes a managed platform resource

Large hub-and-spoke estates often run virtual router appliances whose scaling, patching, and failover belong to the customer. A platform router can remove that VM fleet while providing a high-bandwidth transit point for east-west traffic and cross-region private-endpoint access.

It remains a router, not a firewall. Traffic inspection, policy, DNS, and end-to-end application resilience still require their own design. Fixed tiers and service limits also make capacity planning necessary.

## Model paths before migration

Draw current routes for spoke-to-spoke, on-premises, private endpoints, and internet egress. Confirm supported regions, subscription limits, route-table behavior, and the dedicated subnet requirements in current Microsoft documentation. Select a tier from measured peak throughput, flow counts, and expected growth.

Build a test hub and validate symmetric paths, IPv4 and IPv6 policy, failover, and interactions with Azure Firewall or other appliances. Watch bytes, packets, new flows, and concurrent flows in Azure Monitor. Generate enough load to reveal route asymmetry and stateful middlebox constraints.

Plan cutover and rollback at the route-table level. Since resizing may require replacement, leave headroom and document that operational consequence. General availability makes production adoption supportable, but only topology-specific tests show whether the managed router fits an estate's inspection and availability requirements.
